MY REVIEW

Meet Mack. He is a big dog “on the outside,” but “on the inside he felt small.” Mack is like many children (of all ages); he doesn’t like thunderstorms, loud noises, new people, or being left alone. When any of these things happen, Mack’s legs get wobbly, his tummy feels full of butterflies, and he can’t seem to catch his breath. Then his family brings a new dog home and she and Mack become best friends. Gertie teaches Mack her special rhyme for when she feels scared. “1-2-3, a deep breath for me, 4-5-6, blow it out like candlesticks, 7-8-9, everything will be fine, when I get to 10, I do it again.” As Mack reminds himself to use the helpful rhyme, he learns to feel like a big dog inside and out. The illustrations capture Mack’s efforts to cope with his discomfort. Readers will see him hiding under a desk (only halfway under, because he is a big dog), cuddling with “his special toy, Mr. Fox,” and doing some deep breathing. Gertie’s irrepressible personality, as well as her funny appearance - “like a potato with sticks for legs” - come through clearly. Photos in the back of the book show real life Mack and Gertie. This is a great story to share with children, whether they have any particular anxieties or not. Learning to take a few breaths and help yourself calm down in a situation that makes you nervous or upset is a useful skill at any stage of life. I can see teachers and counselors keeping a copy of this book on hand to share with kiddos having a bad day and needing some help in reclaiming their calm.

MY REVIEW

Rae is an artist, and a scientist, and a doctor, and today she’s a chef. “I like making sandwiches because they remind me of families,” Rae tells her cat Nero. “No matter how many different kinds you have, or how you mix them up, they’re all still sandwiches!” Besides being a multi-talented child, she is also very insightful. She explains the role of each sandwich ingredient as she prepares to add it to her creation. Bread is the parents, turkey is the love, lettuce is the fun, pickles are the kindness, and cheese is the kids. Sounds pretty tasty, right? The problem in this story is that some of the ingredients seem to be disappearing from the kitchen island where Rae is working. First, the turkey keeps vanishing. Then Dad takes the pickles and Mom says there is no tomato. Finally, Rae realizes that her dog Phebe has been pilfering ingredients. She even “ate all of the kids!” (Remember, that was the cheese - no children were harmed in the making of this sandwich.) Rae yells at Phebe and then sits down to eat her sandwich “without any kindness, just a little bit of love, and no kids.”

The illustrations capture the fun of Rae’s many energetic pursuits, Nero’s fascination with the whole sandwich-building process, and Phebe’s flight from the kitchen after being scolded. Rae’s scowling face when she is left with a rather plain sandwich is an understandable reaction. And her crossed arms and drooping head as she looks down at the plate capture her disappointment very well. When readers see “Phebe staring up at her with very sad puppy dog eyes,” we all know it is a good thing Rae made the sandwich with some forgiveness, i.e. mayo. The final image of Rae hugging Phebe and Nero leaning in to make a group hug shows how families can forgive and make up - even when someone steals half your sandwich fixings. This is a funny, loving story of family. It shows how the best plans can go wrong and there can still be room for laughter and hugs and…mayo! Okay, forgiveness. But remember - "Love really is the most important part of a sandwich."

ABOUT THE AUTHOR-ILLUSTRATOR

When Lorena M. Proia graduated with a BFA from Rochester Institute of Technology in Graphic Design and Painting, she never imagined she’d become an Information Architect in high-tech. She thought her creativity was lost until she was rescued by an Australian Shepherd named Phebe. Inspired by Phebe’s antics, her drawings became Phebe-n-Me, a t-shirt company, which grew up to become a children’s book! How to Make a Sandwich is her first picture book.
