PreS-Gr 3 –Part–recipe book, part–board book, and all fun, this interactive experience takes readers through the steps of baking their own pizza. The cover illustration shows a pizza nearly assembled with the title in place of the waiting toppings. An invitation, “Let’s make a pizza!” greets readers at the top of the first spread, which introduces all the ingredients and tools one would need. Steps in the recipe are placed prominently; sometimes at the top of the page, on others they may be seen on the mixing bowl or the oven door. The interactive pages have future chefs pulling a tab to pour salt into a bowl, turning a wheel to set the oven’s temperature, or even kneading dough (a squishy plastic insert). Clean graphic design keeps the illustrations pleasing to the eye and easy to follow in sequence. Simple, accurate directions make this a book that can be enjoyed for the reading experience or put to use in the kitchen for a family cooking activity. VERDICT Entertaining and useful, parents of future foodies will want the entire series.
