MY REVIEW

"Thinking outside the box is like...Coloring outside the lines on purpose!" That is an ides that will appeal to many young readers (as well as their adults). Justine Avery has described the process in various ways such as "doing the opposite of the most obvious thing" or "taking something apart...To put it back together again in a different way." Illustrator Liuba Syrotiuk has also done the unexpected. One image that captures the idea of doing the unexpected shows rows of umbrellas with one turned upside down to catch the rain. A page about "slowing down - or even stopping - when everyone else is rushing around" has a sloth happily snuggled under a blanket with a steaming mug while a row of feet hurry by overhead.

Whether it is talking about "your super brain" or "seeing things through your own personal view," the text and illustrations give plenty of examples to inspire readers. This is also the perfect book to start the school year off by introducing growth mindset with students. As it says, mistakes are "just as valuable as every time you get things right." Parents, teachers, counselors and other adults interested in supporting children in keeping an open mind and learning through every experience (success or failure), need a copy of this book to share with the young people in their lives.
The Fairview Review is participating in the blog tour in partnership with The Children’s Book Review and Justine Avery.

  1. Just the idea of continuing to instill thinking outside of the box in children, gives me hope. If we are to continue to thrive on this planet, with this planet and with each other, outside the box thinking is exactly what we have to do.
