MY REVIEW
Illustrations full of saturated blues, greens, and other woodland colors draw readers into this story of finding one's place in the world. A leaf on a gorgeous old tree thinks it is on its own and wonders how it has managed to hang on so long. It does not notice the forest animals who are respectful of the wise old tree. Once it does finally drop from the tree, it discovers that it is part of something much bigger - that it was not existing on its own, but was dependent on the tree whose roots provided the necessities of life.
This is a story that can apply to many situations in a child's life. Anyone may feel alone, even though they are part of a family, a class, a team, or a community. And for very young people, seeing how they fit into the whole can be difficult without some guidance. Reading this together and having a discussion about the lesson the leaf learned would be helpful in making text-to-self connections for young readers. And re-reading on their own, they will appreciate the scenic woods, mountains in the distance, and woodland creatures making their way beneath the trees.
