MY REVIEW
I fondly remember summers as a camper and as a camp counselor. The scene at the beginning of this book as the campers return to Camp Horizon is very similar to those memories. Counselors waving their arms for attention, or cheering to welcome everyone. Campers running up to friends and bouncing around in group hugs. Yes, very familiar. What I did not have at summer camp was a mysterious creature in the lake…at least, I don’t think so. But Harry and Felix and the other campers all hear stories about the giant turtle-shaped entity that has caused the lake’s name - since everyone who sees it always says, “Oh my gosh!” And when they venture out in the rowboat and forget their life preservers, readers will be wondering if they will encounter the mysterious resident of the lake. Illustrations capture the joyful sunny days of summer, the diverse mix of campers, the reactions to campfire tales (laughter, hiding faces in fright, wide-eyed amazement), and even a shadowy silhouette reminiscent of Nessie at the far side of the lake. The sign reminding campers of water safety is also clearly shown, although the boys are in too big a hurry to remember the rules. Once the crisis strikes and the boys and their boat begin to sink, youngsters will be holding their breath in anticipation and hoping that the tales are true. Just how will the boys make it safely back to shore?
