MY REVIEW
Alycat is a young cat who has a confident attitude and enjoys activities at school, at home, or with her friends. This time she is excited about the science fair and sure that her project is a winner. The day goes downhill for her when she sees Lucy wearing the same science-themed shirt and even sitting in Alycat’s favorite seat on the bus. Then she discovers they are both doing the same experiment for the science fair. Is Lucy a rotten copycat?
Alycat is irrepressible - even on cattywampus days when everything is backwards from what she expects, or when she has the “scaries” worrying over future events. She does best with the help of her friends and family, so it should be no surprise to readers familiar with the series that she manages to succeed this time, too. With some encouragement from Spotty and some help from an unexpected source, Alycat has a great experience demonstrating her project. She also makes a new friend.
Young readers will enjoy the tension as Alycat tries to decide how to react to Lucy and the resolution of the problem. Adults will have their own laughs as they see the slogan on the shirts the girls wear, “Science doesn’t freak meowt!” and the image of “Albert Catstein - the great scientist and mathematician.” They will also be amused at Alycat’s assumption that Lucy copied her project idea. After all, what science fair doesn’t have at least two baking soda volcanoes? The usual themes of resilience, friendship, and being kind to others are present just as in the other books, but I appreciated that Alycat also shows that girls can enjoy science.
