MY REVIEW
Henry has a problem. His mom made his favorite pie, but won’t let him have a slice. That seems so unfair that Henry throws his truck across the room. The truck almost hits his little sister and lands in the dog’s bowl. Henry yells. His mom yells. And Henry storms out of the house.
Many children have flared up in anger and frustration just like Henry. It might be over a perceived unfairness or for a completely different reason, but the feeling of anger can be very powerful in the moment. Luckily, Henry has Bella and Bird to talk it over with him. Bella is a very wise horse and offers Henry some tools to deal with his feelings. She talks him through box breathing, cool-down counting, and using an emotion wheel to put feelings into words. And when Henry uses those tools, he is able to apologize to his mother, get his toy back, and find out the reason why he couldn’t have a slice of pie.
Young children trying to deal with their own anger can use those same tools. Reading the book with a trusted adult can help facilitate a discussion of how normal feelings are, that everyone has them, but that we need to find appropriate ways to express them. It is easy to see that throwing a favorite toy across the room and having it taken away, like what happened with Henry’s truck, is not the best choice to make. Information in the back is useful for adults who are caring for children that may need some guidance just like Henry.
