MY REVIEW

No matter how big or tough you are, no matter how self-assured or fierce you may seem to others, you can always have your own fears and doubts to deal with. Even though Simon is a Rottweiler, a breed that many believe to be incredibly fierce, he has rough days just like everyone else.

It seems like everything that could possibly go wrong, does so. Simon has a bad dream. His brother jumps out wearing a mask and frightens him. There is a fire drill, a math test, and bullies to deal with at school. How much can one young dog take? Even at a sleepover at his friend Kevin’s house there are ghost stories to ruin the fun for him. Luckily, Kevin’s big sister has some great advice to share and teaches him how to calm his anxiety. 

The appendix to the book gives readers directions on how to make their own thought bottles and how to use belly breathing so they can find their own sense of peace, just like Simon does. Stories like this use animal characters to help kiddos deal with situations that may arise in their own lives. If you know a young child who is having trouble with fearful or anxious feelings, then this might be just the book to share with them.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Nicole Kluemper, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist at a small community clinic in San Diego, California. She earned her undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of San Diego and her doctorate degree in clinical psychology from Alliant International University. Dr. Kluemper is a Navy veteran, a published author, and lives just outside San Diego with her husband of seventeen years and their dog, Simon.
