My Old Friend, Then explores mindfulness the same way that kids approach life: with curiosity, humor, and unspoiled sincerity. MY REVIEW
We all know the way some thoughts seem to take up all our concentration no matter how hard we try to focus on something else. For children it may be dreams of accomplishments they hope to someday make or memories of past escapades. The part of the mind that greedily pulls our attention away from everyone and everything else is portrayed as Then.
This book shows how Then always seems to be full of stories, future plans, and past adventures, but never really wants to interact with the present. That is why we also need a friend like Now. "Now isn't afraid of losing me or sharing me." In contrast to the way Then takes attention away from loved ones and favorite things, Now shares in them and enjoys them, too. Now also knows how to take a moment to breathe, to laugh when something is funny, and offer courage when things are scary.
Author Katherine Davis-Gibbon uses child-friendly examples to show the importance of balance. Imaginative stories are great, and so are memories and dreams for the future, but being present in the moment is where we should spend most of our time. The illustrations of the characters Now and Then as shadowy twins to the protagonist help to emphasize the point that this is an internal balancing act. This would be a good read-aloud for a discussion of mindfulness with young children.
