MY REVIEW

Each of the books in the series teaches a different lesson and does so with a lot of humor. In Wally Whale's Mighty Tale, Koa tries to guess the secret to being mighty. "How about chair?" "Or how about chocolate?" Youngsters reading along will know that a chair is not the secret to happiness or being mighty and will laugh at Koa's guesses while learning that "Happiness is a choice." Kali learns a similar lesson in Jojo Giraffe's Big Laugh. Jojo shows her that taking the unkind comments of others personally is as silly as a giraffe trying to live in an anthill or walking around with a neck like a hippo. (The illustrations capture the absurdity of those imaginary situations.) But it is not always the animal teaching the child a life lesson. In Compare Bear's Double Dare, it is Danny who helps Compare see that it is better to be oneself than to live in fear of looking bad in comparison to others. These stories are good introductions to the topics and can serve as discussion starters for parents or teachers. Whether these issues have already cropped up or adults simply want to head off potential misunderstandings and hurt feelings, they are a fun read that will gently steer children toward a positive outlook.
