MY REVIEW

Little Red Driving Hood is always helping out in her mom’s auto repair shop, so when she sees neighbors having trouble as she walks to Grandma’s apartment, she jumps in to help. But she can’t get Baby Wolf’s ride-on car to work at the daycare’s playground. And when she works on Mama Wolf’s car and then has her start it, “it still doesn’t work, and now it’s a mess!” Red is feeling very discouraged as she trudges along, but that turns to fright as she bumps into Papa Wolf. He is very upset that she hasn’t been able to help his family and now he says he will eat her if she can’t get his SUV running again. Talk about performance anxiety! Readers will see that Little Red starts out confident and determined, ready to help Grandma and others that she meets around town. But as each repair job ends in disappointment, her smile turns to a frown, her head droops, and she is dripping with nervous sweat as Papa Wolf snarls and threatens. Luckily, as she rattles around in her toolbox a repair manual falls out. With the directions to help guide her she is able to get the SUV running smoothly and keep Papa Wolf happy. This retelling of Red Riding Hood features a brown-skinned Little Red with lovely curly hair tucked into her red ballcap. Her cheerful red outfit includes a belt, pants with padded knees, and a handy shirt pocket to tuck small tools in. Mom’s outfit is similar, but in a blue color. And Grandma shows her style with funky sunglasses and a fanny pack. All the other characters are wolves or bears.

A good book to recommend to kids who can’t get enough of their favorite fairy and folk tale characters, and for those who love anything to do with cars and vehicles. This would also be a good story to share when talking about perseverance.

MY REVIEW

Milo is a very lucky French bulldog who lives with his best friend in beautiful Milan. One day, when his friend is busy working, Milo is bored and decides to have an adventure on his magic skateboard. What follows is a series of visits to famous cities across Europe. Paris, Zermatt, Berlin, London, Barcelona, and even Rome are just a thought away as he travels on his skateboard. In some cities, Milo sees the sights while remembering fun he had there with his friend. He recalls how they ate croissants by the Seine in Paris and all the fun they had in Berlin. Other places make him think of the fun they have looked forward to having there someday - like exploring the mountains (and chocolate) of Switzerland, seeing London and Barcelona, or even a city as ancient as Rome. But through it all, something is missing. As it begins to get dark Milo realizes the whole adventure would be more fun with his friend instead of being on his own. Young readers can get a sense of the wondrous variety to be found across the different countries and cities of Europe as they read about riding on a double-decker bus, see the Eiffel Tower as Milo whisks through Paris, or enjoy the skyline of Milan at night as Milo returns home. But they will also understand that travels and adventure can be much better if they are shared with a friend or loved one. The cartoon style illustrations capture Milo's fun-loving personality as he whizzes around on his skateboard, while also showing details like the guard at Buckingham Palace or the architecture of Barcelona. The photo in the back of Kristina and the real-life Milo will have readers letting out a heartfelt “awwwww.” It will also leave them wondering what this duo will experience on their next outing, and perhaps thinking about a future adventure of their own.
