Summer Reading 2019 Fool's Errand

42938398. sy475

Safely back with her mother after a short time spent in a group home, Ruby is trying to adjust to the recent changes in her life. Due to the social worker that took Ruby away from her parents, the entire family is now split up. Ruby's mother married a friend in order to provide a more stable home life, while her father spends even more time on the road with his band. Her older brother Ray is home only between gigs with their father's band, and even when he is in town he is often out with his new girlfriend. Ruby has grown even closer to her best friend Sophie during all the upheaval, including the transition to attending public school.

But Sophie has problems of her own, since her mother has been blacklisted as a communist sympathizer and cannot find work (writing scripts for TV and stage). And after their last day of school, Sophie and Mrs. Tanya disappear. Mrs. T as Ruby calls her, is trying to avoid testifying before the House UnAmerican Activities Committee, because she knows they will demand that she give the names of other writers or industry friends who may have attended a Communist meeting or shown sympathy to their cause. Ruby reflects that, "Mainly I think Congress believes everyone in Russia has cooties...And Congress doesn’t want Americans to get them." It may seem that she is downplaying the serious situation, but for a 12-year-old with Beat generation parents, it probably does seem as though the committee members are some sort of playground bullies. And the sporadic letters (with no return addresses), only tell Ruby enough about Sophie's situation to make her very frightened for her friend.

Readers will be amazed at the details packed into the story - the sights, sounds, and even smells of the Village in 1958 fill Ruby's life. Along with the descriptions of Italian ice flavors and the music of corner street buskers in the Village, the author also adds in layers of racial relations. Ruby's brother Ray met Jo-Jo "while she was waitressing at the restaurant where her mom works. She said other customers don’t even see her when they order and he looked her right in the eye and smiled." Being treated as invisible because her parents are Chinese is something that Jo-Jo is used to, just as Ruby's friend Bo is accustomed to being treated differently because he is a black man. His determination to join the Civil Rights activists in Mississippi has all his friends afraid for his safety.

Amidst all the change and unrest, can Ruby possibly find Sophie and make sure she is safe?

For fans of historical fiction, Fool's Errand is an option to explore for the scene in Greenwich Village in the late 1950s, the state of racial inequity, and the climate of fear created by the HUAC Blacklist. Recommended for ages 10+. I read an e-book provided by the publisher for review purposes.

MY REVIEW

Wes is in a situation that turns up fairly often in movies and television shows, the rookie cop who has flubbed his first assignment and is sent to another squad in disgrace with the warning that he only has one shot at redeeming his career. To rub salt in this particular wound, Wes comes from a family of overachievers and even has a father who is also in law enforcement. Great. No stress, no pressure.

When Wes arrives at his new post, it seems that someone is having fun at his expense. What's up with all the crazy steampunk weapons? And the absurd badge with the crossed broomsticks? This has got to be some cruel and unusual punishment for his mistakes. But the deeper into the case he and his partner go, the more Wes starts to see and believe things he had never thought possible before. Maybe his crazy partner really does know what is going on and how to save the beautiful Morgan Pendragon.

Michael Okon knows how to take familiar stories and turn them on their heads. If you have read his Monsterland books, you already know this. Whether it is a theme park visit gone wrong, or a buddy cop story, Okon puts a unique spin on established tropes and takes the reader for a surprising adventure. Along the way there will be drama, laughs, and plot twists to keep everyone turning the pages.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Witches Protection Program
Written by Michael Okon

Publisher’s Synopsis: Wes Rockville, a disgraced law-enforcement agent, gets one last chance to prove himself and save his career when he’s reassigned to a 232-year-old secret government organization.

The Witches Protection Program.

His first assignment: uncover a billion-dollar cosmetics company’s diabolical plan to use witchcraft for global domination, while protecting its heiress Morgan Pendragon from her aunt’s evil deeds. Reluctantly paired with veteran witch protector, Alastair Verne, Wes must learn to believe in witches…and believe in himself.

Filled with adventure and suspense, Michael Okon creates a rousing, tongue-in-cheek alternate reality where witches cast spells and wreak havoc in modern-day New York City.

MY REVIEW
As a dog owner, I often wonder what goes through their minds. What do they think about? What are they dreaming of when they curl up for a nap?

In this delightful story, readers find out the answers - at least for Brina and her friends. Brina imagines that she would go to school, even doing homework in the evenings. Her friends imagine themselves working in an office (complete with hands-free phone headset), becoming a cook, or starring in movies. The illustrations show each of the friends in their imagined human roles - giving presentations, chopping vegetables, or taking selfies with fans on the red carpet. But as they reach the end of the day, they realize that perhaps a dog's life is best.

A fun read for the parents and youngsters, If I Were Human offers a dogs-eye view of human activities and contrasts it with the simple pleasures of naps, treats, and belly rubs. Which life would you prefer?

ABOUT THE BOOK

Written by W.B. Tyler
Publisher’s Synopsis: Brina, a Scottish Terrier, has lots of fun thinking about what she would do if she were a person! But when she shares those ideas with her friends, she begins to realize just how special it is to be a dog. The simplicity of If I Were Human makes it ideal for early readers, but with its imaginative story and entertaining illustrations, adults and children alike will love it. And who knows―you just may discover that you’d rather be a dog!

Summer Reading 2019 Pippa Park Raises Her Game

43886298

Publisher's Synopsis:
A Contemporary Reimagining of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens for Middle Graders

Life is full of great expectations for Korean American Pippa Park. It seems like everyone, from her family to the other kids at school, has a plan for how her life should look. So when Pippa gets a surprising basketball scholarship to Lakeview Private, she jumps at the chance to reinvent herself.

At Lakeview, Pippa struggles with popularity and the pressure to perform academically and athletically while keeping her past and family’s laundromat a secret from her elite new classmates. Juggling jealous Queen Bees, old and new friends, her own place at Lakeview, and an unrequited crush on the school's most handsome— and most haughty— 8th grader is hard enough. But when Pippa begins to receive a string of hateful, anonymous messages via social media that threaten to unmask her carefully built persona, things begin to spiral out of control.

With pressure mounting, Pippa discovers the real reason she was admitted to Lakeview Private, and wonders if she can keep her old and new lives separate, or if she should even try.

My Review:
Even if readers have never heard of Great Expectations, they will enjoy Pippa's story. Just imagine how it would feel to be forbidden to do the one thing you excel at. That is how Pippa feels when her older sister says she cannot play on the school's basketball team because her math grade is too low. And when Pippa learns that she has to see a math tutor once a week - it's like pouring salt on the wound. As she thinks, "No amount of Choco Pies or chestnut cakes could fix this." But things don't seem so bad once she meets the tutor and find out he is really cute, even if he does live in a fancy house and have very stuffy relatives.

Then she learns that she will be attending the same school as her tutor due to an anonymous scholarship offer. Pressure mounts as Pippa struggles to fit in with the rich kids at Lakeview, keep her math grade up, and do her best on the basketball team. It is similar to what many students feel when they transfer to a new school, but since Pippa is trying hard to create an "interesting, confident, private school version" of herself, she has turned her life into a pressure cooker. The threatening messages she receives keep her constantly on edge, worried that her school life and home life will collide, adding to her already frazzled nerves.

When the big explosion happens, it throws open all the secrets Pippa had tried to hide, but it also releases all that pressure and makes it possible to start setting things straight. As her brother-in-law says, "the lower you fall, the more room you have to rise." Maybe she can meet those great expectations after all, at least those that are worth the effort.

The contemporary setting, the diverse mix of characters, the contrast between rich and working class, and the typical teen issues of friends, crushes, and deciding what sort of person one will become all mix together for an entertaining story that has something to offer a variety of readers.

Highly recommended for middle grade readers who enjoy realistic fiction

I read an advance reader copy provided by the publisher for review purposes. Any quotes are from that copy and may change before final publication.
