Bizzy Bzzz the Bee and Grandpa’s Tea is reading made fun. Told through the eyes of a child, this is an entertaining story about a boy who gets a good laugh watching Grandpa’s encounter with a bee every morning while trying to enjoy his cup of tea. Teetering on the edge of frustration, Grandpa has a heightened escalation with Bizzy.

The boy comes up with a quick solution that allows Grandpa to enjoy his morning tea and lets Bizzy stay. It’s safe to say, the Grandson saved the day. This story has playful rhyme, problem solving, and is sure to put a smile on faces of children every time.

Bizzy Bzzz zips around Grandpa’s head three times and makes him dizzy. It’s funny when his eyes cross. He looks so silly.

MY REVIEW

Anyone who has tried to enjoy a sweet drink outside and found themselves with the unexpected company of a bee can understand Grandpa’s situation. All he wants is some peace and quiet to enjoy his tea and watch the sunrise, but Bizzy Bzzz will not leave him alone. Grandpa shuffles across the porch, shoos the bee away, but nothing helps. His grandson laughs as Grandpa dances “as if he has ants in his pants” and his eyes cross from watching the bee circle around his head.

The good-natured laughter at Grandpa’s antics does not stop our narrator (the grandson) and the faithful dog Sparks from wanting to help. They jump into action like superheroes when Grandpa loses his balance, making sure that he lands safely and his tea doesn’t make a mess. And that same grandchild comes up with a wonderful idea to resolve the situation with Bizzy (no, it doesn’t include a flyswatter).

The illustrations show a grandchild living with a grandparent; readers see his cozy bedroom complete with bunk beds. The images also show Grandpa putting “in his pretend teeth” and stretching the kinks out of his back as he starts his day. While there is some gentle humor at Grandpa’s expense, it is obvious that it is a loving relationship. Young readers who enjoy family situations, especially those where the child saves the day, will enjoy the tale of Bizzy Bzzz.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Travis Peagler is a unique individual, being the youngest of seven kids, raised partially in low-income apartments on the East side of Dayton, Ohio, until the age of nine. Humble beginnings growing up in a somewhat multi-racial neighborhood gave Travis an inimitable perspective on life at an incredibly young age.

His imagination has always been his outlet. Thinking back to grade-school when he was in an uncomfortable situation or when he didn’t handle conflict well, Travis would always replay the scene again in his mind where things played out the way he wished. An innate defense mechanism, he assumes, which led to the discovery of his extraordinary talent.

MY REVIEW

Little Allies is perfect for a teacher, guidance counselor, or family looking for a way to encourage children to be "up-standers" rather than bystanders. Children quite often see a situation that makes a friend or classmate uncomfortable or unhappy, but they don't know what to do about it. This short book is full of ideas to remedy the situation. Ideas include being supportive when friends speak for themselves, speaking out when friends can’t, or finding ways to praise the friend's strengths and unique abilities.

Learning that everyone has their own appearance, skills, and background can help children to get along with others in their class or other groups (school, scouts, church, etc.). Reading how Ally (the narrator) discovers new things about her own classmates is a nonthreatening way to learn about diversity and empathy. As Ally says,  “I learned that my friends aren’t exactly like me. They’re unique and different. I think that makes all of us more interesting.” Her teacher’s discussion about being an ally for others introduces more food for thought. “An ally is there for you when you are teased. Or when someone treats you unfairly. It can be a teacher, a parent, or a friend.“

Extra material to help in using the book includes a discussion guide, “The Ally Promise,” and a glossary of terms to know. This story is short, but it can lead to wonderful conversations about inclusion.

MY REVIEW

Faith and Sparkle are perfect as superheroes because they have their alter ego identities firmly established. To most people they seem like a little girl and her dog, but that is only when they are not doing their super feats. They can do incredible things to help Grandma like - get her cane for her, fan her when she gets too warm, or even help her mix up a superpower smoothie (sign me up for one of those).

Illustrations show a child and her pet having a grand time digging holes, eating ice cream and reading books. Sparkle is obviously a very patient and loving dog who goes along with all of Faith’s plans. The pictures also give readers a laugh as they show ways that the duo did NOT become super. Hint - it wasn’t through radioactive ooze, although ooze could be responsible for brussel sprouts. (It’s okay Faith, I am on your side about not eating them.)

Even better than the closeness between Faith and Sparkle is the bond between Faith and Grandma. It is obvious that Faith is willing to do anything for her grandmother and that Grandma appreciates every effort. Families and teachers looking for books that show intergenerational relationships should check out the world of Faith and Sparkle.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Faith is creative, curious, adventurous, and loves life. She enjoys learning new languages (French and Spanish), reading, making music, experimenting in Mad Science, studying jiu-jitsu (she is in ninja training), and being outside. Faith is loving, caring, and kind, and loves dreaming up her next adventure with her grandma and her dog, Sparkle.
