MY REVIEW

Webster is a therapy dog with a family of two loving humans and a black lab named River for a brother. Although he used to be a hunting dog, now he can relax and enjoy nature and observing the animals along the river throughout the year. Each season in the book has Webster accompanying his owner for a different activity - crabbing, fishing, collecting oysters. Webster even likes to check up on the ospreys that come to build their nest each spring. Illustrations capture Webster’s cheerful personality and enthusiasm for all his activities. Seeing him bounding from rock to rock along the Rappahannock River makes it clear that he enjoys his life. While readers may be amazed to see him munching green beans, it will not be a surprise at all that he takes a nap alongside his furry brother. Who wouldn’t need a little rest after all those adventures? Webster learns a lot about the animals while supervising his owner, but readers can also find out interesting facts that are included as sidebars to the story. Young nature lovers will be entertained to discover that ospreys sometimes include dog toys in the construction of their nests or that blue crabs can have over two million eggs at a time. The photos of the author and his beagle make the inspiration for the story very obvious and will probably have readers asking if Webster will be having any more adventures in other books.

MY REVIEW

Willard is dealing with a situation many children have as the new school year begins - he is in a different class from his friends and worries about how different everything feels, especially since he hasn’t made any new friends yet. His teacher tells him his feelings are natural, but to keep this in mind: “name the difference, find something good about it, and move on with kindness.” As Willard ponders this on his walk home, he discovers a trail that he has never seen before. He meets new animals and uses his teacher’s advice to help each of them with a problem. By the end of his journey, Willard realizes he has learned something from each of his new friends and that “differences aren’t all that different when you love and accept others just as they are.” Young readers will enjoy the illustrations that show Willard learning to dance with Theodore the bear as Theo twirls and Willard high steps alongside. The sight of a tiger blowing bubbles and his boast that “My lungs are so strong that I can fill any jungle with bubbles!” may have readers wanting to find their own bottle of bubbles. And a squirrel throwing away nuts because they give her a stomach ache is sure to cause a few giggles. But along with the laughter is the theme present throughout the book - moving forward with kindness can make many situations better and help us to find new friends along the way. This is a great story to share with kiddos feeling apprehensive about being in a new class and making new friends.

MY REVIEW

Dragon is a friendly individual who loves to make new acquaintances. Sir Fiero, the new knight that has moved into the neighborhood, is convinced that dragons and knights can’t be friends. He even turns down Dragon’s invitation to play hide-and-seek until the princess says she is going to play. What he thinks he should be doing is “rescue princesses … before covering them with smooooochy kisses.” He pouts when the princess quickly spots him behind a tree, then tries to pick a spot where Dragon won’t locate him. Unfortunately, that ends up with Sir Fiero accidentally locked in the tower. Has the knight offended all his would-be friends to the point that they will leave him there? The text offers readers many opportunities to interact with the story. We are encouraged to wink like the knight, roll our eyes like the princess, cover our eyes and count while everyone hides, add some sound effects for those smoooochy kisses “Mwa!” or give a friendly wave to everyone. Illustrations capture the emotions of the characters. Dragon droops her head and wrings her tail in distress when the knight turns down her invitation to play. Sir Fiero pouts when he is the first one found during the game. And the princess (as mentioned) rolls her eyes because “she absolutely, positively does not need saving.” Besides being a story about friendship, this book also tackles some assumptions that are usually taken for granted. Princesses don’t need to be saved and may enjoy playing hide-and-seek rather than waiting around for “smooooochy kisses.” Knights may be afraid when they are alone in the dark. And dragons may breathe fire, but they also can be very good friends to have. Sir Fiero and young readers learn the valuable lesson that “maybe, sometimes we all need rescuing” and “a kind friend will always show up in time of need.”
