MY REVIEW
I listened to a podcast where Erin Entrada Kelly was the guest, and she talked about reading books as a kid. She said that her experience was like many other kids from various ethnic backgrounds; she never saw a character that looked like her and assumed that characters in books were white by default. That is why she makes sure to include diverse characters in her own books when she writes them. In Hello, Universe her characters are very distinct individuals with their own unique outlooks on life and ways to interact with others.
- Virgil Salinas lives in a family that is full of "big personalities that bubbled over like pots of soup. Virgil felt like unbuttered toast standing next to them." His closest friend is his grandmother, who tells him stories from the Philippines.
- Valencia Somerset wears hearing aids and has been a loner since her best friend dumped her in 3rd grade. Her mother is overprotective, but claims, "I'm not overprotective because you're deaf. I'm overprotective because I'm your mother."
- Kaori Tanaka is convinced she has the second sight and "liked to tell people that her parents were born in the high, misty mountains of a samurai village. In truth, they were second-generation Japanese Americans from Ohio."
- Chet Bullens loves to bully other children, picking on Virgil and Valencia because they visit the resource teacher once a week. But he is also afraid of dogs and yearns for his father's approval.
I enjoyed this story so much that I sat and read it in one big gulp. I was rooting for Virgil, laughing at Kaori's mystical pronouncements and her sister Gen's hot pink jump rope, wishing that Valencia would make at least one friend, and sincerely hoping for Chet to learn a lesson. I won't tell if any of my wishes came true - you need to read the book and find out for yourself.
