If you have ever tried to keep a household quiet while a reluctant sleeper is drifting off to dreamland, then you will appreciate this book. The narrator explains, "I just put the most rascally dragon to sleep," and warns readers not to wake the dragon. But it seems that every page turn reveals a new and frightfully loud event. Doors slam shut in the breeze, cooks drop pots and pans, there is even a birthday party with singing and drums! Youngsters will enjoy the many instances of onomatopoeia that they can mimic; bang, clink, clank, knock, boom. The interactive element will have them stroking the dragon's back, rocking the book from side to side, whispering "Shhh!" and even singing a lullaby along with the inhabitants of the castle. The illustrations are bright and capture each humorous scene such as knights dancing under a disco ball or a mouse floating in a mixing bowl. Even the end papers offer a glimpse into the story. Those at the front of the book show readers a wide-awake dragon looking out the castle window, while those at the back show her smiling in her sleep - just as we hope kiddos will be doing after reading this delightful bedtime story.

ReplyDeleteMy students and I love to read any story about dragons, but this one about a sleeping dragon lends itself to so many activities and play-acting! As a school librarian I try to find the best books for our collection and this one looks like it will be one of those forever books. My own daughter has tried to avoid bedtime by saying that her tooth just HAS to come out before she can go to bed, she HAS to say goodnight to the sun, and my favorite, she wants to make sure that her parents are asleep before she can go to bed because she worries about us!
