MY REVIEW
Anyone who enjoys bedtime stories, or who knows some youngsters who could use a special book to help settle into bed at night, needs to grab these titles. 20 Unicorns at Bedtime - is just right for little ones who can’t get enough unicorns. They can read all about Mindy and her decision to count something more special than sheep when she can’t get to sleep. The front endpapers introduce each unicorn with labeled illustrations, making it easy to identify Sparkletail or Candyheart when they appear in the story. Rhyming text follows Mindy’s count as she makes her way up to a dozen before drifting off, but she continues all the way to twenty in her dreams. 20 Dinosaurs at Bedtime - has a similar pattern, but with a story that features dinosaurs. The front endpapers give the scientific names of each dinosaur such as oviraptor or triceratops. Readers can look for their favorite dino as the four children count their way to twenty (again only reaching twelve before slipping into their dreams to finish the count there). 20 Elves at Bedtime is perfect for the Christmas season. Elves with delightful names like Spangle-Bangle or Bimble appear in the front endpapers, along with a short descriptive phrase such as “the tree-decorating elf.” A read-aloud can quickly become a game of finding and identifying each elf as the rhyming text names the tasks Santa sees them working at while he counts his way to twenty. Don’t fret, although Santa does get a bit sleepy, he makes it safely to twenty and tucks all the elves in before getting his own rest to prepare for Christmas Eve. The three books feature a diverse cast of children and elves with various skin tones and shades, as well as textures of hair. For children who like the comfort of familiarity, the color palette of the illustrations, the rhyming text, and even the pattern to the counting all give the series a recognizable style. The unicorns, dinosaurs, and elves start off each book awake and active, then appear in the back endpapers peacefully asleep and numbered so that readers can count them one last time before turning off the light and joining them in dreamland.
