Publisher’s Book Summary: In 1981, I. M. Pei was on a mission. A successful architect known for his modern designs, Pei was asked by the French president to redesign the Louvre Museum in Paris, home to the Mona Lisa and now famous for the glass pyramid at its center. At the time, the Louvre had many problems and no pyramid.
Pei faced many obstacles, including discrimination because he was Chinese American. Determined to succeed and make the Louvre a welcome place for all, Pei worked hard—and sometimes in secret. This is the story of a visionary who worked patiently and persistently to solve problems and achieve his goals: to plant and grow a glass pyramid.

MY REVIEW
Mention the Louvre and images of famous art inside a beautiful building come to mind. But outside the building is a dazzling entrance - the glass pyramid designed by architect I.M Pei. Since the pyramid was inaugurated in 1989, many of us are accustomed to its unique beauty and consider it an integral part of the museum. Yet many Parisians and French citizens in general objected to the design when it was first introduced. This book tells the story of architect Pei’s design and its road to acceptance.
Details from Pei’s background are woven into the tale of his search for the perfect way to update the Louvre and create an entrance that enhanced the experience of visitors without taking away from the history and appeal of the museum. Readers learn of his childhood in China, his move to the United States for college, and his invitation from the president of France to work on the beloved museum.
Digitally created illustrations capture the thought process of Pei’s inspiration as he remembers lovely gardens in China, looks over details of Versailles, and comes up with his plan. Images also show some of the construction, the archaeological finds during the excavation for the new entrance, and the completed project. Back matter includes a photo of Pei next to the pyramid, a list of selected sources and online interviews, and more details of Pei’s life and career. This is a perfect book for introducing STEAM concepts.
