Summer Reading 2021 The Man Who Died Twice

The Thursday Murder Club is back in action and with plenty to do. One of their own, Ibrahim, has been mugged practically on the front steps of the police station. A former partner from Elizabeth's days in covert operations turns up in the retirement village. The club's friends in the local force are feeling stymied in their efforts to gather evidence against the local drug kingpin. And that is just the start of things.

After meeting the characters in their first adventure, this time around we can pick up a few more pieces of their backstories and watch as the relationships deepen. We understand completely why Elizabeth would call Joyce when there has been a shooting, or why Ron would be the perfect one to go undercover as a plumber. Bogdan, the contractor with the mysterious past, is still lending a hand and also plays a mean game of chess. And Chris and Donna have their hands full trying to catch the bad guys in town and still figure out a social life.

What makes this book so enjoyable is that the characters have such depth. Joyce may be a maternal nurse, but she can gently bully her friends into doing what she thinks is best. Elizabeth is a tough former operative, but also has the tender side that she shows her husband Stephen as they deal with his dementia. Ibrahim is incredibly smart, but it turns out that Ron is the best one to keep him company at the hospital even though they have such opposite personalities.

And when the friends get pulled into an investigation involving crime bosses, millions in diamonds, false identities, and hitmen - there is no telling what they might do. But I think the criminals should watch out, because these senior citizens are no pushovers.

Due for release on September 28.
