MY REVIEW

The story of Oi's adventures is full of narrow escapes from dangers and also good luck in finding new friends. "Curious as a cat" is a phrase that might have had Oi in mind when it was created. This determined kitten won't stay safely at home and wait for Mummy to bring home dinner, he explores the neighborhood and visits the marketplace. Despite nearly being run over in the street, being chased off by grumpy vendors, and having to weave between the feet of busy shoppers, he seems to thrive on the hustle and bustle. Of course, the reward of being fed tasty bits of human food by a kindly woman is part of the fun. When further adventures have him fleeing from an angry dog and becoming lost far from his family, he learns to fend for himself.

There is a strong sense of place in this book. The language incorporates words from Kenya such as matatu for a public service vehicle or kibanda for a wooden grocery stall. The call of "Toa taka!" (get out the rubbish) from the trash collectors is another bit of local dialect, along with expressions like lorry for truck or compound rather than yard or property. Colorful illustrations capture the clothing, the press of all the vehicles, the bundles balanced on shoulders or the backs of scooters, and even the artwork on the side of a van as it whizzes by. The dilapidated shed that Oi's family shelters in contrasts sharply with the brightly furnished home where Oi's new housecat friend lives.

For young readers who enjoy stories of cats (or animals in general) who become lost or separated from their families and must find their way home, this is a satisfying read with enough danger to keep it suspenseful and an endearing character who will have them rooting for his safe return.
