MY REVIEW
This book tells the story of Marion’s first day of school and turns it into a guessing game for the reader. Coco the cat points out details like facial expressions and body language that can help readers identify each emotion. Together with the situation that Marion is experiencing, the clues make it easy to guess correctly. Coco also names each feeling so that there is no doubt. The things that happen throughout the story are very familiar to young students just starting school. Waking up, arriving at school, meeting the teacher and classmates for the first time, enjoying some of the activities, being frustrated by others, and finally talking the day over back at home with family - these are all fairly universal events for the first day of school. The illustrations clearly show all the details Coco points out - eyes, mouth, hands, posture. The text of the main story is in black lettering while the comments by Coco are in purple making them easy to differentiate. Being able to express feelings appropriately and to discuss them with others is a very helpful skill. Young children often do not have the vocabulary to identify their emotions and tell others how they feel about a situation. Stories like this are very helpful in providing that vocabulary.
Miss Kaye was born in the Philippines. She had challenges as an adult neurodivergent. This serves as her inspiration for writing fun, engaging, and educational stories to teach life skills and mindfulness to kids.
