MY REVIEW
My First Book About Dinosaurs combines the fun of a coloring book with the helpful facts of an introductory nonfiction text. It begins with an explanation of dinosaur fossils, how they were formed, and what can be learned from them. There are also details about how fossils are dug up and reconstructed. A family tree shows the various sorts of dinosaurs and how paleontologists group them. Then the book goes through the time periods and introduces some of the more prominent species from each. Illustrations show the creatures of land, air, and sea; some are in scenes while others are grouped by physical characteristics or diet. All the dinosaurs are labeled for easy identification.
An especially helpful diagram shows a Plateosaurus skeleton and points out the differences between the lizard-hipped and bird-hipped varieties of dinosaurs. Other diagrams show Coelophysis and Archaeopteryx skeletons and discuss their features. Several of the spreads include a human figure with a note about the size for comparison to the dinosaurs shown. The Cretaceous dinosaurs are grouped by where they were found with pages for each continent. The book closes with the end of the dinosaurs, but also reminds readers that they may visit dinosaur exhibits in museums. If you know a young reader who is fascinated with dinosaurs, this book would make an excellent gift.
