Publisher’s Synopsis: Why would anyone need six thousand doughnuts?
Big family…little house… Fifth-grader Abe Mitchell is fed up with sharing. All he wants is something to call his own. And he just might get it when he finds a loophole in the fine print of a doughnut shop coupon. Abe thinks it entitles him to a fresh-baked mountain of crullers, dunkers, and chocolate-frosteds. But cashing in means war with Marlene Paczki, the daughter of the doughnut shop owner and Abe’s new crush.
MY REVIEW
Sharing a room with your brother can be annoying. Sharing it with two brothers is even more annoying. But when your two sisters are also squeezed in to make space for unexpected company, it is more than your average 5th grader can stand. Add to that the aggravation of always being stuck with hand-me-down clothes and toys, and even having to share a treat when your father agrees to take everyone to the doughnut shop...it is no wonder that Abe just wants something he can call his own.
Abe is a fairly typical 5th grade boy. He dreams of having his own bedroom, new clothes, a phone, and a doughnut that he doesn't have to split with his sisters. When he reads the fine print on a game ticket from the Sweetly Crisp shop, it seems like his dreams may finally be coming true. You've seen them, those peel-off game pieces that offer a free drink or an order of fries from your favorite fast food restaurant. Instead of ignoring all the disclaimers, Abe reasons out exactly what that "cash equivalent" phrase could mean. Is his logic sound? Could he really get 6,000 doughnuts from Sweetly Crisp?
Packed with family shenanigans (his twin brothers could give Artemis Fowl a run for top evil mastermind), the terror of girl/boy relationships in upper elementary school, a seemingly unending string of disasters and mistaken intentions, and even an appearance on reality TV courtroom show, Six Thousand Doughnuts is sure to have readers laughing out loud and cringing in sympathy as Abe pursues his prize.
