MY REVIEW
Author Carole P. Roman has written numerous books for children. My students love her series If You Were Me and Lived in… because they don’t just focus on details they need to know for school reports, but actually show things that are interesting to school age kiddos. Now she has taken that ability to know what young readers like and applied it to an adventure story that will capture the imagination of middle grade readers. Grady Whill has some of the earmarks of a character destined for involvement in great things. He lost his parents when he was young. Then he lost the grandparents that were raising him. Now he and his uncle are struggling to make ends meet and maintain a home. Grady has a friend who is the target of bullies, which also puts Grady on their radar. Aarush is on the autism spectrum, so he relates to people and the world differently than other students. Both boys hope to be chosen to attend the Templeton Academy, a new experimental school that is supposed to take only the best and brightest. When the boys get their wish and arrive at Templeton, they learn that it is unlike any other school they have ever heard of. No contact with the outside world, one phone call home per month, and the teachers all seem to have odd abilities. But their bully nemesis from middle school is also there and seems to have found a kindred spirit, as well becoming the pet student of one of the teachers. Will this school really be so different after all? Readers will enjoy the variety of abilities each of the characters have, and how they learn to work as a team. Just as in other ensemble casts (the Harry Potter and Percy Jackson series for example), the students have different backgrounds and watching them interact and grow during their term at school is entertaining. But readers will also be learning along with them as they encounter lessons about failure, finding one’s inner strength, and making hard choices. When the school term and the book end, readers will be eager for classes to reconvene and the next adventure to begin.
