Fall Reading 2019 Madam C.J. Walker Builds a Business

This fictionalized version of Madam C.J. Walker's life is from the Rebel Girls line of books featuring females who lived (or are living) inspirational lives. In the case of Sarah Breedlove Walker, that life began with being the first of her family born free from slavery and ended with her becoming the first self-made female millionaire in America. Details about Sarah's childhood, her marriages, her desire for a better life for her daughter, and her discovery of hair care products as a business opportunity carry the reader along. Activities in the back matter encourage readers to think up a product idea of their own, create an ad for it, and even write up an elevator pitch for the product.

There is a note on the copyright page that explains the book is as accurate as possible, but that the author may have changed some details "to suit the needs of the story." It is an engaging story and will probably encourage the curiosity of readers about Sarah and other entrepreneurs.

After the incredible success of Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls and its sequel, it is nice to see that full-length books are being published on personalities from those stories. Keep an eye out for more titles coming soon. I won this book in a giveaway by the publisher.
